eXpansys begins selling unlocked GSM Palm Pre

The GSM Palm Pre might be an O2 exclusive in the UK but that doesn’t have to stop your hopes of owning a GSM Palm Pre.  Online mobile mega retailer eXpansys has started offering the unlocked GSM Palm Pre on their European website for £499.99.  Unfortunately this will not take care of your US 3G bands, but it would get you in the door with EDGE data speeds in the states.  Although this might be completely unacceptable to many, those itching for a Palm Pre fixing should jump at the offer.

Samsung and LG shine in Q3 Market Share

Samsung and LG shine in Q3 Market Share

Research firms Strategy Analytics and IDC have released their third-quarter numbers for the global handset market.  The two big names making waves were Samsung who saw a 15.9% year on year growth and an astonishing 34% increase for LG.  Nokia experienced continued pressure during 3Q09 in its Devices and Services group. The company reported a 20% decrease in revenue, ASP decline, and a shortage of components across its product portfolio.  Samsung reached a new record by shipping more than 60 million units in a single quarter. This puts the company well within reach of achieving its goal of shipping 200 million units in 2009.  LG Electronics breached the 30 million unit mark for the first time in its history. Nearly half of those units sold for less than $100, making them handsome purchases for carriers.  Sony Ericsson marked Hideki Komiyama’s final quarter as president of the company. During his tenure, Sony Ericsson realized improved operational efficiencies and cost reduction to increase profitability.  Motorola slipped to fifth place, but in the process the company reported progress in its restructuring campaign. In addition to reducing its operating losses for the second consecutive quarter, Motorola announced its much anticipated Android-powered converged mobile device, the CLIQ/DEXT, as well as its new DROID.

Bell Canada launches Samsung Omnia II for 2010 Olympic Winter Games

Bell Canada launches Samsung Omnia II for 2010 Olympic Winter Games

Being picked the smartphone of the year by your favorite gadget mag is one thing, but being the official mobile device of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games is in a league of its own.  Canadian carrier Bell confirmed today that the Samsung Omnia II will be released in November and it has been designated as the Official Mobile Device of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games being held in Vancouver Feb 12 – 26 next year.

Unofficially logic tells us that this move is part of a marketing campaign to boost sales, but we can’t help but have high expectations for the sequel of a device we already enjoy.  Customers who buy the Samsung Omnia II from Bell will be able to download the Wireless Olympic Works communications platform (aka WOW), which is offered for free and provides real-time information about the Olympic Winter Games.

Many countries have already launched the Samsung Omnia II including China and Australia so we expect a warm welcome from Canada.  If the Omnia II specs are a bit fuzzy for you right now let’s recap: the Samsung Omnia II features Windows Mobile 6.5, a 3.7 inches WVGA AMOLED touchscreen display, TouchWiz 2.0 UI, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3.5mm headset jack, 5MP autofocus camera, and up to 48GB of storage space.

HTC Hero coming to Telus in GSM flavor

HTC Hero coming to Telus in GSM flavor

The all-powerful Twitter has just blessed us with a Halloween treat.  According to the Telus Twitter page, the carrier has confirmed that a GSM/HSDPA Hero will be coming to the carrier.  It will feature the same 528MHz processor, 5-megapixel camera, WiFi b/g, and Bluetooth offerings as the CDMA version, but the big question is Android 1.5 or 2.0?  It is too early to know which version will ship with the Telus HTC Hero, but the confirmation is a win in our books.

Nokia’s N-Gage gaming service reaches EOL

Nokia's N-Gage gaming service reaches EOL

It’s a sad day for those of us who enjoyed Nokia’s N-Gage gaming service.  In a post on the official N-Gage blog news came this morning that Nokia will no longer publish new games for the N-Gage platform and instead games will be provided via its Ovi Store.  Current N-gage games can be purchased until September 2010 and the N-Gage website and Arena service will be available throughout 2010.  It is clear that the future of gaming for Nokia will be based around the Ovi service, farewell N-gage we’ll miss you.

Google will allow Google Navigation on Apple iPhone

Google will allow Google Navigation on Apple iPhone

By now most have you have seen the power of Android 2.0’s Google Navigation Software and many of you were wondering if this software would be coming to the iPhone.  According to Google the iPhone has all of the capabilities required to deliver the software and the strong partnership between Apple and Google will help the software come the iPhone.  The deciding factor in the matter is whether the application is approved by the App Store.  After some harsh choice of words between Google and Apple in the FCC probe over Google Voice it would be ill advised to reach a conclusion so soon.  The good news is that Google is willing to port the software, but whether or not Google and Apple can look past the Google Voice fiasco could be the deciding factor.

Motorola promises 20 new Android-based smartphones in 2010

Motorola promises 20 new Android-based smartphones in 2010

We knew that Motorola was looking to end ties with Windows Mobile in favor of Android, but we never expected the following news.  Motorola’s Sanjay Jha has promised that Motorola will produce at least 20 new smartphones running Android in 2010.  For a manufacturer that has fallen from the lime light of mobile market share in the past few years it seems almost impossible that they could produce 10 Android smartphones in 2010, nonetheless 20.   We hope that Motorola delivers on their promise and even if they fall short of 20 devices we won’t hold it against them.  It looks like 2010 is going to be quite the year for Google and Android and we’ll be along for the ride.

China Unicom gets ready for iPhone 3GS launch

Tonight iPhone sales will begin in China for carrier China Telecom.  The sale of the iPhone in China has been a long time in the making, but it is not stopping the lines from forming.  It is pretty interesting how they run things in China, you can either register online or simply show up to buy the phone but both scenarios require you to be in person for your device and wait in a line.  Congrats China, enjoy the iPhone 3GS goodness.

New leaked documents suggest all the Droid Eris grumblings we've heard were true: it should launch November 6, and it will supposedly run $99 after rebate. That's pretty cheap considering it matches the specs of the $180 Hero.
