Apple iPhone makes official debut in South Korea

After years of wrangling with privacy concerns over the iPhone’s location-based services, the Apple iPhone is now finally available in South Korea. Hundreds of people, hoping to be the first on their block to rock the iPhone, lined up overnight outside Olympic stadium in Seoul. Those not willing to brave the elements turned to pre-orders, with nearly 65,000 customers reserving an iPhone in the weeks leading up to the launch. The iPhone is being sold by #2 cellular provider KT Corp and has been priced competitively with a 32GB iPhone 3GS retailing for 396,000 won ($338USD) with a monthly plan of 45,000 won ($38 USD) and 264,000 won ($225 USD) with a monthly fee of 65,000 won ($55 USD). Samsung and LG, two homegrown manufacturers that currently dominate the South Korean market, are supposedly already feeling the pressure as they’ve started to lower handset prices across the board in South Korea.

sales of Sony Ericsson Aino halted!

When it rains, it pours, and for Sony Ericsson, this week has been one big torrential downpour. Earlier we reported on the Sony Ericsson Satio which has been pulled from the shelves of the UK’s two major retailers due to a software glitch. Only a few days later, sales of the Sony Ericsson Aino were halted due to a growing number of customer complaints with the touchscreen. Once again, the source of the complaints was traced back to a glitch in the software. Trying to minimize this public relations nightmare, Sony Ericsson responded by saying “We are working as quickly as we can to solve it. Aino has sold limited numbers in the UK and this issue affects a very small number of consumers.” The promise of a future software fix is little consolation to Aino owners affected by this glitch and a thorn to angry stockholders who must be shaking their heads in utter disbelief.

Samsung breaks 50 Million in Touch Screen Phone Sales

Samsung breaks 50 Million in Touch Screen Phone Sales

We often lose perspective of touchscreen global device sales when iPhone clouds the headlines. To realign our focus, Samsung issued a press release Monday morning announcing that they have marked the sale of their 50 millionth touchscreen mobile device.  According to the manufacturer they sold 40 million units this year through the end of November and sold 10 million in 2008.  The rapid adoption of touchscreen phones proves that consumers love intuitive interfaces, powerful multimedia features and sleek designs.

So how exactly did Samsung reach the 50 million unit mark so quickly?  The answer can be found in the manufacturer’s extensive touchscreen lineup.  The Star (model: S5230), a powerful multimedia mobile first introduced this May, became Samsung’s fastest selling mobile, surpassing 10 million units within six months of its launch. Other popular models include the F480, which has sold 9 million units since May 2008, and the Corby(model: S3650), a youth-focused model, which has sold 3 million units within only two months since its launch in September of this year.

Next Generation iPhone 4GS Leaked

Next Generation iPhone 4GS Leaked

There’s no telling what name the next-generation iPhone will carry, but what we can tell is that the device exists and is currently listed as the “iPhone3,1″.  Whether you call it the iPhone3,1, iPhone 4G, iPhone 4GS, iPhone 3GS^2 or just iPhone 4, one thing is for certain and that’s the buzz building across the net.  The speculation surrounding the iPhone 3,1 began Sunday morning when Pandav, an iPhone developer, informed MacRumors that they spotted usage records for an unreleased iPhone model.  Earlier this year before the iPhone 3GS was released we spotted usage records referencing iPhone 2,1 so the reference to iPhone 3,1 clearly indicates an unreleased device.

As of today the rumors about the next-generation iPhone point towards a multi-core processor to boost performance as well as Verizon CDMA compatibility.  With At&t’s iPhone contract expiring later this year and Verizon milking the Motorola Droid marketing blitz all the way to the bank, the future of Apple’s smartphone will be filling headlines throughout 2010.

HTC Hero Android 2.1 Update coming soon?

HTC Hero Android 2.1 Update coming soon?

There’s no telling what type of roadmap HTC plans to layout in the quest to match HTC Sense with Android’s latest OS Build, Android 2.1.  What we do know today is that a leaked screenshot has hit the interwebs which demonstrates that HTC has managed to find a way to let their Sense UI mingle peacefully with Android 2.1 and that someone somewhere is enjoying an updated HTC Hero.  We appreciated the minor update which solved the text message and bluetooth issues on the Sprint HTC Hero, but there is no telling when an Android 2.1 build will actually start rolling out to handsets.

For more Android 2.1 screenshots head on over to Be Geek.
