AT&T posts strong Q4, adds 2.7 million wireless subscribers

AT&T is the latest company to turn in their Q4 report card, and so far, things are looking good. AT&T is reporting Q4 revenues of $30.9 billion with a net income of $3 billion. AT&T Wireless boasted a 2.7 million customer net-gain in Q4 — 7.3 million additions for the full year — and trimmed $200 million from operating expenses year-over-year. An increasing customer base, the lowest churn rate in company history (1.44%), and an eighth straight quarter of increased ARPU (average revenue per user) made for a profitable Q4.

Financial Results & Motorola & Q4 2009 28 Jan 2010 11:58 am

Motorola Mobile Device Sales Drop 22 Percent in Q4 2009

Motorola Mobile Device Sales Drop 22 Percent in Q4 2009

The results are in for Q4 2009 and Motorola’s Mobile Device segment is still bleeding into the red.  Sales for Q4 2009 were $1.8 billion, down 22 percent compared to the same quarter in 2008. For the full year 2009, sales were $7.1 billion, compared to $12.1 billion in 2008, and the segment incurred a GAAP operating loss of $1.1 billion, compared to an operating loss of $2.2 billion in 2008. During the quarter, the Company shipped 12 million handsets and estimates its share of the global handset market was 3.7 percent.

On the plus side the Motorola Droid/MILESTONE was named Time Magazine’s “Best new gadget of 2009″ and the CLIQ/DEXT didn’t fair too bad either.  2010 will be the true test for Motorola – launching the BACKFLIP in the US and the MT710, XT800 and MOTOROI in China and possibly other countries.  We are big fans of the Motorola Droid and the RAZR will always have a place in our heart so let’s hope Motorola pulls out the big guns in 2010.

Press Release & RIM & Research In Motion & Verizon & slotRadio+ microSD Card & verizon wireless 28 Jan 2010 11:31 am

Verizon offers the slotRadio+ microSD Card for BlackBerry Smartphones

Verizon offers the slotRadio+ microSD Card for BlackBerry Smartphones

Verizon Wireless and SanDisk are bringing more music to BlackBerry customers thanks to the release of the new slotRadio+ microSD Card.  The slotRadio+ microSD Card combines 1,000 music tracks from top Billboard artists with an additional 4GB of flash memory for personal storage – all on one microSD memory card.  The idea behind product is that while listening to the hand-selected playlists on the slotRadio+ microSD Card, Verizon customers will touch the VCAST Music button and purchase the titles as full tracks, ringtones or ringback tones.  This sounds like a pretty clever move to boost some VCAST Music sales if you ask me, but if you do not decide to make any purchases at the end of the day you still have 4GB of storage and 1,000 songs to listen to on your BlackBerry smartphone.

Now here’s the catch – in order to listen to the 1,000 music tracks you need to direct your BlackBerry browser to http://m.slotradio.com and download the app (the install is a .jad file).  There’s two version of the slotRadio+ card: Billboard Hits or Billboard decades.  The slotRadio+ microSD Card will be released on January 29 for $49.99 and it will work with the following Verizon BlackBerry smartphones: BlackBerry Curve 8530, BlackBerry Pearl 8130, BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230, BlackBerry Storm 9530, BlackBerry Storm2 9550, BlackBerry Tour 9630 and BlackBerry 8830 World Edition smartphone.

BlackBerry Magnum & Research In Motion & prototype & review 28 Jan 2010 11:07 am

BlackBerry Magnum Video Review

BlackBerry Magnum Video Review

Not long after the release of the original BlackBerry Storm rumors began to surface about a hybrid device codenamed “Magnum”.  The BlackBerry Magnum is cross between the design and keyboard of BlackBerry Bold 9000 and the click-able touchscreen of the BlackBerry Storm.  With the addition of a touchscreen, the Magnum drops the trackball/trackpad of current models and instead focuses on two main buttons – back and menu.  Other than the touchscreen and 2 button layout, the mini USB connector is gone from the Bold 9000 and it has been replaced by a micro port on the Magnum.  No word on what version of the BlackBerry OS will be loaded on the Magnum since the prototype in this video is blank, but as usual we’ll get to the bottom of things.

Google Voice Web App for iPhone and WebOS

Google Voice Web App for iPhone and WebOS

The power of HTML5 is now the saving grace for implementing Google Voice on the iPhone and WebOS.  According to Google’s Mobile Blog, starting today iPhone and WebOS users now have access to web-based version of Google Voice by simply visiting http://m.google.com/voice from their mobile browser.  Once you are logged in to the website you will be able to make calls with your Google Voice number as your caller ID, listen to voicemails or read voicemail transcripts, send and receive free text messages and make low-cost international calls.  What makes the HTML5 web app work is AppCache – a key ingredient to allowing interaction with web apps without a network connection while local databases allow you to store data locally on the device, so you don’t lose data even when you close the browser.  If you recall, back in April of 2009 Google began revamping Gmail for mobile with HTML5 and load times became 2 to 3 times faster.

Beyond the basic functionality of the Google Voice Web App, Google recommends that you make use of shortcuts on the iPhone home screen or Palm Launcher.  Adding a “Dialer”, “Compose SMS”, “Inbox” or “Contacts” shortcut will help make the web app seem like a native app on your phone along with the performance and speed of HTML5.

If you are not a Google Voice member request an invite at www.google.com/voice or find and existing user/friend to pass along an invite code.

T-mobile UK looks to land the Nexus One

It seems that Vodafone might not be the only European carrier offering the Google Nexus One this Spring.  According to the Twitter feed for T-mobile UK’s head of corporate affairs, Robin O’Kelly, the carrier is talking with Google and hopes “we can come up with something very soon”.  We know T-mobile UK is standing strong behind Android devices with the LG InTouch Max and Samsung Galaxy Portal so it makes perfect sense to add the Nexus One to their lineup.  The good news is that in the event T-mobile UK and Google are not able to ink a deal there’s still that $529.00 unlocked option.  An expensive alternative yes, but compared to the $800 unlocked Colorware Nexus One we’d say it’s a bargain.

How To & Motorola Droid & Overclock & tutorial 28 Jan 2010 10:13 am

Root the Motorola Droid to Unlock 1.3GHz Processing Power

Root the Motorola Droid to Unlock 1.3GHz Processing Power

If you own the Motorola Droid and have a need for speed, sit back and relax as we show you how to take your Android handset to the next level.  In order to fully exploit the Motorola Droid’s TI-OMAP 3430 processor (Cortex-A8) you will need to root your phone.  If you are not sure what rooting entails we suggest you read these 5 reasons to do so, but be warned – rooting will void the warranty despite the new level of awesomeness you’ll be able to exploit.  After rooting your phone you will need to follow a quick 4 step process (overview below) and download a zip file directly to your device for the desired clockspeed.

  • Reboot phone into recovery console (this CANNOT be done using a terminal emulator while running)
  • Run ‘adb shell su’ (all directions provided with single quotes should be run without including them). If you don’t know how to do this step comfortably, there is lots of good info on AllDroid starting here: http://alldroid.org/viewtopic.php?f=210&t=837.
  • You must have flash_image available then run ‘flash_image boot targetBootImage.img’ where targetBootImage.img is the boot image you want to flash.
  • Reboot and enjoy. If your WiFi isn’t working, look for more directions below on how to correct that.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Overclocking the Motorola Droid can be found here.  If any of the steps above seem confusing we suggest you take a pass on this one and live vicariously through others on the forum.
