The folks out at Chinavasion, who have sent us a lot of great gear, sent out one of their Mini Digital Microscopes for iPhone 4, and the end result is a deeply unexpected one. It’s a strange little device, but if you have an iPhone and like getting a better look at stuff, well, you’re going to be abundantly satisfied.

Chinavasion’s Mini Digital Microscope for iPhone 4 offers up, very simply, a microscope with an included frame, so it can attach easily to your iPhone 4′s camera aperture. From there, you’ll be able to open up a whole new look on things with its 60x magnification. Plus, you’ll even have a couple bonus options in the form of a pair of LED lights, as well as one extra light that shows in ultraviolet, as well as a sliding focus.

Admittedly, it’s a bit of a niche product. Okay, it’s a lot of a niche product. But if you ever wanted to use your iPhone for an up-close view of things, illuminated in your choice of light spectra, well, this is exactly what you’re after.

The device is mostly mechanical, so the learning curve isn’t exactly what you’d call steep. Flipping a switch one way gets you light, the other way gets you UV light, and parking it in the center shuts the whole thing down. Slide the whole thing in and out for changes in focus. It’s almost too simple to screw up, really, and it works reasonably well.

The question is, though, are you going to want a 60x microscope for your iPhone? It’s not going to work with any other phone–not even other devices–so you’ll be out in the cold with Android devices. But still, even if you don’t want the microscope, it’s actually still worthwhile as a surprisingly bright light, as well as an ultraviolet light, which is great for retail store owners who want to check for counterfeit bills. This light turned my wallet into an odyssey of exploration.

And here’s the great news–whether or not you have to have this or you’d just like to have it, Chinavasion’s going to make you a great offer for it. How great? How’s $10.78 worth of great? Yeah, pretty great, isn’t it? Getting an ultra-small flashlight with UV light capability for $10.78 is no small deal in its own right.

So while the Mini Digital Microscope for iPhone 4 may not be for everybody, there’s plenty of value here, and plenty to like.

The Good

Variety of uses

Simple to use

Inexpensive

The Bad

Very niche

Only fully works with an iPhone 4

Score 8 / 10

<img

In fact, at various times the community comes forth with a new security exploit that could potentially allow malicious users to take control of any given iOS powered device. On the flip side of things, these exploits have also been used to jailbreak devices as is the case with the latest release of JailBreakMe.com.

Well, while the jailbreak is easy thanks to the exploit it does have some users worried that they are going to get their data stolen. Luckily, rumors have just surfaced today that say Apple is hard at work looking to push out the latest iOS 4.3.4 update. However, don’t be expecting any groundbreaking features with this release as according to the updates all iOS 4.3.4 will do is patch the PDF exploit effectively breaking the latest jailbreak in the process.

In other words, if your device is currently jailbroken I’d wait off on installing iOS 4.3.4 when it is released.
<div

To wrap up the week, we’ve got another terrific product from the folks out at Chinavasion, who sent over one of their waterproof iPhone cases for us to try out. There will be good news and bad here, and you’ll find by the end that it does a pretty nice job of doing what it’s supposed to do, as long as you don’t push it too far.

The Waterproof Case for iPhone (it will also, happily, work with iPod Touch, Android phones in the vein of phones we’re constantly reviewing here, and other similarly-sized devices) allows you to slip your portable item of approximately the same size as an iPhone into a plastic sleeve, which also has a lanyard so you can wear it around your neck. Once you’ve slipped the device in the plastic sleeve, you can close it with two catches at the top, whereupon your device rests in relatively waterproof comfort.

I say relatively, of course, because it wasn’t waterproof after all. I tested this out via the simple expedient of putting one square of toilet paper into the case, closing it up, and then setting it into the bathroom sink with the tap on full for about fifteen seconds. Turns out the toilet paper was a sodden mess. But for your basic watery events, like ocean spray or rain, you should do all right here with this, and the touchscreen controls worked sufficiently well, as tested via the time-honored tradition of a game of Angry Birds. And here’s the best part–you can get these for just $7.27 out at Chinavasion’s web site, so having one of these on hand should be simple, and pretty useful.

The clasps are easy to work and the complete case itself looks sufficiently presentable, so if you need a way to get your iPod or the like from point A to point B and you need it to stay as dry as possible, well, then you should have just what you need right here. Just don’t overestimate the thing’s waterproofing capabilities, though, as you’ll be sorely disappointed.

The Good

Reasonably waterproof

Simple to use

Inexpensive

Looks pretty good

The Bad

Not completely waterproof

Score 9 / 10

<img

In the current market Apple’s iPhone is one of the most popular smartphones. Much of this success has been attributed to the fact that the device essentially popularized the full touchscreen form factor and not the mention the fact that the iOS App Store is one of the largest mobile application depots in the game today.

While this has largely become the norm it’s quite the feat for Apple to have accomplished. As you may or may not know throughout the first 3 iterations of the iPhone AT&T was the only carrier here in the United States that actually offered the device. Now a days the device has found its way onto Verizon but compared to devices like the Galaxy S just two carriers is still a minuscule amount.

However, it seems that while the iPhone is offered domestically only on Verizon and AT&T these carriers are not the only ones that consumers are using the device on. In fact, it was just reported that over 1 million users are currently using an iPhone on T-Mobile’s network. This, of course, is due to the fact that T-Mobile features a network similar to AT&T’s allowing consumers to unlock an iPhone and pop a T-Mobile SIM card into said unlocked phone

Unfortunately at this point it doesn’t mean much but perhaps these numbers will further pike Apple’s interest in officially bringing an iPhone to the T-Mobile network. Would this be something you are interested in or can you make do with Verizon or AT&T’s network?
<div

<g:plusone size="standard" count="false" url="http://www.mobilewhack.com/iphone-3gs-running-ios-5-gets-untethered-jailbreak/"></g:plusone>

Apple currently has one of the most popular mobile operating systems in the world in the form of iOS. Currently, iOS 4.3.3 is the most recent publicly available version of the platform. However, during their WWDC event CEO Steve Jobs came forth to announce that iOS 5 would be coming in the near future giving us things like a new notifications system and more.

But as of now iOS 5 is still in its final stages of development and has yet to hit the market. Luckily, there is a beta version available to developers giving a select group of people an early look at the build. Thanks to this, it seems that the discovery of an untethered jailbreak has already been made for iOS 5 running on the iPhone 3GS. The software needed for this is dubbed Sn0wbreeze and only works with units running an older bootrom.
Apple’s iPhone is without a doubt one of the most popular smartphones currently on the market. As of now, there are 4 different iterations of the device starting with the iPhone and ending on the iPhone 4. While the different devices have their respective pros and cons, there is one gripe that has been one ongoing issue giving users headaches. And that is the fact that Apple has yet to offer the devices unlocked.

Luckily, this problem is a thing of the past as Apple has updated their website today adding in both 16GB and 32GB iPhone 4s (in white and black) for sale completely unlocked. In terms of pricing, the 16GB model will run you $649 while the 32GB model fetches $749. Check out the listing here.

<g:plusone size="standard" count="false" url="http://www.mobilewhack.com/igloves-review-great-for-touch-screens-bad-for-cold/"></g:plusone>

The folks out at Light In The Box sent out a pair of their iGloves (gloves geared toward iPad, iPhone and iPod touchscreens), and I’ve got some good news for anyone who finds him or herself having to work a touch screen in winter–these work pretty well.

The iGloves are pretty much just what they say on the box, gloves for the touch screen controls of your favorite piece of Apple hardware. They’re reversible, so lefties and righties alike will be able to use them with equal aplomb, as the pictures below will bear out. The index finger and thumb of one glove are made with a conductive material that lets you use your touch screens, and the gloves themselves keep your hands warm.

I’ve seen this kind of thing before, so I was a bit skeptical as to whether these would work. So I slapped on a glove and set out to test them in the best fashion possible: a game of Fruit Ninja. And sure enough, I was hacking and slashing with incredible rapidity as each of my finger motions was recorded and played out precisely as I laid them out on the screen. Just to be sure it wasn’t the tightness of the gloves doing the job (and these gloves were sufficiently tight for me to replicate the classic Isotoner experiment of picking up a dime), I tried playing with the other, non-conductive glove, and sure enough, I couldn’t even slide to power off, let alone cut fruit.

There is a down side here, though–you’ll see that, despite their claims of One Size Fits All, larger-handed folks will be hard-pressed to get the things on. Also, in terms of cold resistance (as tested by a frozen block of chicken stock in my freezer), these things are only slightly warmer than nothing, as it took three seconds to feel cold through the gloves.

Still though, they only cost $11.49 for the pair, so while they may not be great gloves for running a snowblower, they will handle your standing-at-the-bus-stop-with-your-iPod needs reasonably well.

The iGloves are surprisingly effective, and a good solid overall solution to the problems of keeping your hands warm and touch screen-friendly all in one package.

The Good

Touch screen-related functions work great

Reversable for lefties and righties alike

The Bad

Poor cold-weather functions

Larger handed folks need not apply

Score 8 / 10

Apple products are some of the most highly sought after pieces of hardware on the market. While some of the products such as the iPhone 4 are priced right around the same point similar products are priced it’s rare that we see a price cut before a next generation device is actually announced. However, it seems that Walmart is looking to give those interested in an iPhone 4 a break with a price cut at select locations.

According to recent reports, select Walmart retail locations are dropping the price tag of the iPhone 4 from $199.99 with 2-year contract down to $149.99 with 2-year contract. Also according to these reports the sale will run from now until June 30th and there’s no telling how long the limited supply of stock will last. On that note, if you’re looking to get down on this deal quickly phone your local Walmart and ask if they are signed up for this promotion. You can thank us later.

However, while the platform is currently on version 4 there is still much room to grow. Luckily, today Apple has come forth to announce the highly anticipated iOS 5 which adds a ton of things that many people have been anticipating in previous versions of the platform.

First and foremost iOS 5 includes a brand new notification system that will allow users to check their notifications by swiping down from the top bar much like Google’s Android. Additionally, Apple will also be including a brand new iMessage system within iOS 5 set to compete head to head with BlackBerry Messenger complete with delivery and read notifications.

Another feature included in iOS 5 is the ability to utilize the volume up key to take pictures within the platform’s camera app. This will come as a relief to those who couldn’t stand utilizing the on screen button to take pictures every time.

This is only a small glimpse of what Apple is set to include in iOS 5 – you can check out a much more in-depth feature set over at the company’s official website here.

<g:plusone size="standard" count="false" url="http://www.mobilewhack.com/xtrememac-incharge-duo-dock-review-great-if-you-have-multiple-idevices/"></g:plusone>

The folks out at the Max Borges Agency have sent over a lot of great stuff for us to review, and if you’re really into iOS portable gear–iPhone, iPad and iPod–then you’re going to really want to hear about this. Today we’re covering the XtremeMac Incharge Duo charging dock, and it’s going to keep your gear juiced up and ready to go at most any given time.

The XtremeMac Incharge Duo charging dock offers two charging slots on which you can charge two of your three favorite pieces of iOS gear at a time. You’ll even get a variety of specific inserts for the various subclasses of your favorite devices, like the iPhone 3G, or the iPod Touch second generation, ensuring that your particular pair of devices will get charged on the charging dock.

The great thing about this is that it works, and reasonably well, at charging your iDevices. The down side, though, is that it’s really only useful with your iDevices. If you don’t already have two out of the three, then this thing is going to be absolutely useless to you. If you do, then chances are something like this will be very helpful for you (though some may question why you need something like this to begin with when most computers offer several USB ports, or you can always get USB to AC adapters and charge them up that way. But still, if you want a convenient dock for them that also does recharging, well, you’ve got it right here.

The XtremeMac Incharge Duo charging dock is really only useful in certain situations, but if you qualify for those situations, then you’re going to be pretty happy with it.

The Good

Highly useful for multiple-Mac item situations

The Bad

Only useful for multiple-Mac item situations

Score 5 / 10
