LG & LG Pop & Press Release 22 Feb 2010 04:10 am

LG Pops One Million in Sales

LG Electronics announced today that the LG Pop (LG GD510) topped one million in worldwide sales just 100 days after its European and CIS launch in October 2009. Now available around the world, this fast-selling full touchscreen feature phone has become one of LG’s most popular models.

With a 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen framed by a super-slim 4.8 mm bezel, the LG Pop has been a big hit with customers looking for a compact phone that has all the features they need built right in. With access to social network sites on its home screen, the LG Pop allows users to update their status on sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter on the go at any time. The LG Pop has won plaudits for its innovative use of green technology. With the optional solar battery cover, every 10 minutes the phone spends in the sun generates over two minutes of talk time or 180 minutes of standby time. Thanks to the phone’s Eco-tree and Eco-calculator applications, users can even calculate exactly how much CO2 has been cut by using the solar battery cover.

In addition to its cheerful name, the LG Pop debuted with a new user interface that included quirky icons and a bright color scheme. Changeable rear covers (available in most regions) added to the phone’s list of customizable features. Where offered, covers are available in fluorescent shades of pink, green and orange, peanut-patterned black and silver, an XO pattern and glossy white. Starting next month, two new phone colors, aqua blue and lime, will be added to the Pop’s
palette.

Financial Results & LG & LG Mobile Communications & Q4 2009 27 Jan 2010 03:22 pm

LG Mobile sells 117.9 Million Units in 2009

LG Mobile sells 117.9 Million Units in 2009

The fourth quarter financial results are official – LG has pushed a record 117.9 million units in 2009, up from the 100.7 million in 2008.  The boost in sales represents a 32-percent year-over-year increase and a 7 percent quarter-over-quarter gain.  Despite the large volume of units when it came down to the Q4 2009 financial statements LG Mobile saw a 7.4 percent drop in sales, 5 percent decline in revenue and a margin of 1.7 percent for operating profit.  According to LG, the declines in sales and revenue can be attributed to price erosion and an increase in marketing expense for year-end inventory clearance and emerging market channel expansion resulted in lower profitability compared to the third quarter.  Regardless of the slow Q4 2009 figures, 2009 yearly sales increased 13.5 percent, with the handset division alone seeing an increase of 17.3 percent year-over-year.

LG & Windows Mobile 7 & htc & release date & rumors 16 Jan 2010 07:02 pm

HTC and LG Talk More Windows Mobile 7

HTC and LG Talk More Windows Mobile 7

When LG leaked that Windows Mobile 7 would be released this year rumors began swirling across the Internet suggesting that Microsoft would unveil the OS at Mobile World Congress 2010.  As contributors to these rumors it was our duty to sort fact from fiction and Microsoft later went on record and confirmed no Windows 7 at MWC.  The likely scenario at MWC will be an introduction to Windows Mobile 6.6, a stepping stone in the evolution of the OS but still considered far behind the competition.

At the launch of the HTC T8388 smartphone in Beijing the CEO of Dopod, a subsidiary of HTC, confirmed Windows Mobile 7 will be coming to China.  Mr. Chen Jinghong explained that HTC was involved in the development of Windows Mobile 7, but the exact release date is up to Microsoft.  He also revealed that the current release of Windows Mobile 7 will not have built-in Chinese support, but HTC still intends to release Windows Mobile 7 phones as soon as it is available.  As it stands today the only HTC device we know will be updated to Windows Mobile 7 is the HTC HD2 and in the interview Jinghong did not suggest any other devices would upgraded.

Over on Twitter, LG continued to spill Windows Mobile 7 news through a French Tech Blogger- Presse-Citron who was participating in a design session at LG Design Labs.  At the design session LG said they expected to release Windows Mobile 7 in September and Android 2.1 in April 2010.  Unfortunately for those of you looking to confirm this bit of information, Presse-Citron’s Twitter feed has been updated and the revealing tweets have been deleted.  However, if you do a Google Search for “twitter pressecitron” you will see exactly what we are talking about in the latest news results at the top of Google.

Mobile World Congress 2010 is coming faster than you think and all the doubts and speculation will soon be answered when Microsoft takes the stage.  In the meantime we’ll continue to follow the stories as they lead us up till the launch of WM7.  For Microsoft’s sake and those die-hard Windows Mobile fans out there, let’s hope MS launches the OS sooner rather than later.

Fastest Texters in the World come from South Korea

At this year’s LG Mobile World Cup in New York City Yeong-ho Bae, 18, and Mok-min Ha, 17, of South Korea defeated a host of challengers to become the world texting champions at the LG Mobile World Cup in New York City. The fruits of their labor was a $100K check- not too shabby if you ask me. All contestants texted in their native language using two of LG’s current mobile phones: the LG BL20, which has a numeric keypad, and the LG GW520, which features a QWERTY keyboard. Morgan Dynda and Kate Moore from the United States placed second, winning USD 20,000, and Juan Ignacio Aufranc and Agustina Montegna from Argentina took third place and USD 10,000.

In addition to the main competition, the players attempted to set a new Guinness World Records® record for fastest texting, using the LG enV3 handset on the Verizon Wireless network. Pedro Matias, 27, from Portugal set a new record by typing a 264-character text in just 1 minute 59 seconds, shaving 23 seconds off the previous record set by Finland’s Arttu Harkki in 2005.

The Morning Mobile Minute: LG, Samsung and Lenovo LePhone

The Morning Mobile Minute: LG, Samsung and Lenovo LePhone

It’s that time again and in today’s Morning Mobile Minute the big focus at CES thus far has been LTE.  At Booth #8205 LG Electronics has been demonstrating the advanced capabilities of Long Term Evolution with the world’s first 100Mbps LTE download.  By connecting to the LD 100U, LG completed real-time demonstrations of full HD video downloads, video conferences and web surfing speeds of 100 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload.  Also included in their presentation was the unveiling of the “Handover” technology which enables seamless network conversion between LTE and CDMA networks.

Also on-hand at CES to affirm their commitment to LTE was Samsung Mobile (Samsung Telecommunications America).  Samsung Mobile is collaborating with Verizon Wireless to help deliver powerful user experiences throught LTE and showcased new and emerging products, including digital picture frames, Mobile Internet Devices (MID) and digital cameras, which utilize practical applications through a connected multimedia ecosystem. Samsung showed off a digital camera capable of HD 720p quality video at 30 frames per second with a large touch screen LCD display. Through an LTE-connected multimedia ecosystem, users would simply upload the pictures and videos over the LTE network to the picture frame or online social networking sites. Real-time live wireless video streaming from a mobile device to the LTE media frame would also be possible.

Last up this morning was an announcement from Lenovo who confirmed the LePhone (pictured above) for the Chinese WCDMA market.  The LePhone will be released in May of this year and features a 3.7-inch 800 x 400 pixel capacitive touchscreen, 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, Android 1.6 OS, 3.5mm headphone jack, an app store (Android Market) and a proprietary 9-pin charging socket.  No prices or carriers were announced at their event, but there’s still plenty of time at CES to release those details.

LG promises more smartphones and Windows Mobile 7 in 2010

It’s not usual that you get a smartphone manufacturer leaking release dates for a mobile operating system, but that is exactly what LG did this morning at CES 2010 in Las Vegas.  LG’s Woo Paik announced that the manufacturer is committed to bringing more smartphones to the industry than in previous years and they have a strong commitment to Windows Mobile.  He also revealed that Windows Mobile 7 will be released in 2010 and not delayed until 2011 like we previously believed.  As far as new phones, LG just showcased their BL40 Chocolate and LG eXpo with the pico projector, both of which we know were released last year.
