Motorola Mobile Device Sales Drop 22 Percent in Q4 2009
The results are in for Q4 2009 and Motorola’s Mobile Device segment is still bleeding into the red. Sales for Q4 2009 were $1.8 billion, down 22 percent compared to the same quarter in 2008. For the full year 2009, sales were $7.1 billion, compared to $12.1 billion in 2008, and the segment incurred a GAAP operating loss of $1.1 billion, compared to an operating loss of $2.2 billion in 2008. During the quarter, the Company shipped 12 million handsets and estimates its share of the global handset market was 3.7 percent.
On the plus side the Motorola Droid/MILESTONE was named Time Magazine’s “Best new gadget of 2009″ and the CLIQ/DEXT didn’t fair too bad either. 2010 will be the true test for Motorola – launching the BACKFLIP in the US and the MT710, XT800 and MOTOROI in China and possibly other countries. We are big fans of the Motorola Droid and the RAZR will always have a place in our heart so let’s hope Motorola pulls out the big guns in 2010.

LG Mobile sells 117.9 Million Units in 2009
The fourth quarter financial results are official – LG has pushed a record 117.9 million units in 2009, up from the 100.7 million in 2008. The boost in sales represents a 32-percent year-over-year increase and a 7 percent quarter-over-quarter gain. Despite the large volume of units when it came down to the Q4 2009 financial statements LG Mobile saw a 7.4 percent drop in sales, 5 percent decline in revenue and a margin of 1.7 percent for operating profit. According to LG, the declines in sales and revenue can be attributed to price erosion and an increase in marketing expense for year-end inventory clearance and emerging market channel expansion resulted in lower profitability compared to the third quarter. Regardless of the slow Q4 2009 figures, 2009 yearly sales increased 13.5 percent, with the handset division alone seeing an increase of 17.3 percent year-over-year.

Apple sells another 7 million iPhones and increases profit by 47%
Apple has reported that there are now another 7 million fan boys worldwide thanks to better than expected sales of the iPhone 3GS over the past 3 months. The news came in the Q4 2009 conference call where Apple shocked analysts and investors by reporting $9.87 billion in revenue and a quarterly profit of $1.67 billion. The better than expected revenue and profit resulted in earnings per share of $1.82, up from the $1.42 prediction. If you are wondering how this is possible in such harsh economic times you can thank the $99 iPhone 3G and some clever advertising to help steer more customers into Macs. The numbers speak for themselves, Apple sold 3.05 million Macs (17% increase from last year), 10.2 million iPods (eight percent decrease) and 7.4 million iPhones (seven percent increase).
